Q: How to pacify aggravated Pitta during summer? 481 →

According to Ayurveda, Pitta dosha is associated with heat, digestion, metabolism, and transformation. During summer, hot weather may aggravate Pitta in the Ayurvedic framework. Traditional Pitta-balancing practices focus on cooling foods, adequate hydration, rest, and reducing excessive heat exposure.
1. Follow a Pitta-balancing diet

Choose cooling, hydrating foods
- Cucumber, watermelon, sweet melon and pears
- Coconut water and water-rich fruits
- Cooked leafy greens, zucchini and bottle gourd
- Rice, oats and other easily tolerated grains
- Fresh coriander and mint in moderate amounts

Reduce foods traditionally considered heating
- Very spicy foods, especially excessive chilli
- Deep-fried and greasy meals
- Excessively sour foods and pickles if they trigger discomfort
- Excessive caffeine and alcohol
You do not need to eliminate nutritious foods unnecessarily; adjust based on your tolerance.

2. Adopt a summer-friendly daily routine

Stay hydrated
Drink water regularly throughout the day. Buttermilk or unsweetened coconut water can be alternatives if suitable for you. Avoid waiting until you feel very thirsty.

Avoid peak heat
Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours. Wear lightweight, breathable clothing and use shade or a cool environment.

Prioritize rest
Maintain a regular sleep schedule, take breaks when needed, and try gentle activities such as relaxed walking or breathing exercises in a cool space.

Keep your surroundings cool
A lukewarm or cool shower, a fan or air conditioning, and avoiding excessive direct sunlight may help you feel more comfortable.

3. Ayurvedic practices to consider
Some traditional approaches include:
- Coriander and fennel: Used in traditional cooling preparations; evidence for balancing a dosha is limited.
- Gentle self-massage: Coconut oil is traditionally used for cooling, but avoid applying it to irritated skin or if it causes a reaction.
- Mindful breathing: Gentle, slow breathing can support relaxation. Avoid forceful breathing practices or breath retention in extreme heat.
Avoid self-prescribing Ayurvedic herbs or detoxification treatments, particularly if you take medication, have a medical condition, or are pregnant.
4. A simple daily plan
Time Suggested practice
Morning Water, a balanced breakfast and light activity
Midday Rice or another grain, vegetables, and a protein source
Afternoon Hydration, shade and reduced strenuous activity
Evening A light, balanced dinner and relaxing activity
Before bed A cool, comfortable room and consistent sleep routine
Important: Pitta is an Ayurvedic concept, not a medically established diagnosis. Symptoms such as persistent acidity, rashes, headaches or excessive sweating can have different causes and may need medical assessment. Confusion, fainting or very high body temperature in hot weather can indicate a heat-related emergency.
