Can Triphala be taken every night continuously, or does it cause bowel dependence?

Classical Clarification: Triphala as a Rasayana vs. Cathartic
Modern chemical and anthraquinone-based laxatives (such as senna or bisacodyl) stimulate colon peristalsis by chemical irritation, which indeed causes muscular atony and severe drug dependence.
In contrast, classical Triphala (Haritaki, Bibhitaki, and Amalaki) operates as an Agni-Deepana (digestive stimulant) and Chakshushya / Rasayana (rejuvenator):
1. Why It Does Not Cause Dependence:
- The high natural tannin content and bioflavonoids tone the intestinal smooth muscle wall rather than stripping it.
- It gently regulates colon secretions without forcing water transudation.
2. Classical Usage Guidelines:
- For gentle nightly bowel regulation: 1 teaspoon of powder or 2 tablets with lukewarm water 45 minutes before sleep.
- For rejuvenative metabolic balance: Take in the morning with pure honey and ghee in unequal proportions.
3. Cycling Recommendation:
- Continuous usage for 3 to 6 months is safe in standard dosage (3-5g). Taking a 2-week pause every 3 months is beneficial to assess natural bowel function.
