How to manage severe knee stiffness and clicking sounds during dry winter months?

I am a 48-year-old female living in Delhi. Every winter when the temperature drops and cold winds pick up, both my knees become exceedingly stiff upon waking up and produce audible cracking (crepitus) when climbing stairs. Is this aggravated Vata dosha? Which classical oils and dietary remedies can lubricate the joints?

Clinical Perspective: Sandhigata Vata (Osteoarticular Vata Imbalance)

Namaste. The symptoms you describe—audible joint crepitus (cracking sounds), morning rigidity, and heightened severity during dry, cold winter climate—are hallmark signs of Sandhigata Vata (degenerative Vata accumulation in synovial joint spaces).

#### Immediate Clinical Protocols:
1. Daily Sneha Svedana (Warm Oil Massage):
- Warm 20ml of Mahanarayan Taila or Ksheerabala 101 Taila.
- Gently apply in clockwise circular motions over both knee joints for 10-15 minutes.
- Follow immediately with localized hot water towel compress (Swedana) to open the joint micro-channels (Srotas).
2. Internal Lubrication (Snehana):
- Consume 1 teaspoon of pure Cow Ghee (Go-Ghrita) in warm water on an empty stomach in the morning.
3. Dietary Guidelines:
- Eliminate dry, raw salads, cold drinks, and fermented leftovers.
- Emphasize warm, oily soups seasoned with ginger, cumin, and rock salt.

If knee swelling (Shotha) or acute pain persists, visit an Ayurvedic hospital for localized Janu Basti (retention of warm medicated oil over the knees).

According to classical Ayurveda (Charaka Samhita Chikitsa Sthana), this condition responds excellently to Triphala churna taken with warm water at bedtime along with an Ahara plan rich in warm, unctuous foods.
