Kayachikitsa

Kayachikitsa (कायचिकित्सा) is the foremost branch of Ashtanga Ayurveda, focusing comprehensively on internal medicine. The term 'Kaya' refers to the internal metabolic fire (Agni) as well as the physiological living body, while 'Chikitsa' denotes systemic therapeutics. According to Charaka Samhita, all systemic illnesses arise fundamentally from the impairment of Jatharagni (the master digestive and metabolic fire), which produces Ama (toxic metabolic intermediate) and vitiates the Tridoshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha).

Kayachikitsa employs a holistic clinical strategy encompassing Shamana (pacification therapy using specialized herbs, herbal compounds, and dietary regimens) and Shodhana (cellular metabolic cleansing). Physicians in Kayachikitsa diagnose diseases through the classical Rogi-Roga Pariksha (eightfold examination including Nadi / pulse, Mutra / urine, Mala / stool, Jihva / tongue, Shabda / voice, Sparsha / skin, Drik / eyes, and Akriti / physical build).
